Saraswati is the dazzing white, pure Hindu Goddess of Wisdom, Music, Eloquence, Learning and  and Art. The literal meaning of Saraswati Rahasya Upanishad is Mystic wisdom relating to the Goddess Saraswati. Similar to the underlying philosophy of the 8 Shakta Upanishads , Saraswati Rahasya Upanishad highlights how fervent Bhakti can lead to the realization of God within,  on the lines of Advaita Vedanta. The Beej mantras of Goddess Saraswati  are tools for the devotee to  absorb himself into his favourite Divinity and eventually realize the Infinite Brahman within Self.

Saraswati Rahasya Upanishad belonging to the Krishna Yajur Veda is one of the eight Shakta Upanishads composed in the late medieval era. Listed 106th amongst the 108 Upanishads in the Muktika canon, this is an important Upanishad that is organized beautifully.

Saraswati Rahasya Upanishad structure

At the start, Sage Ashvalayana is queried by fellow sages on the secret of his supreme perfection and knowledge. In response to this Sage Ashvalayana shares ten Saraswati mantras along with the Beej mantras responsible for his brilliance. (verses 1 to 35)

The next part from verse 36-45 have beautiful hymns to the Goddess describing her grace, blessings and iconography

The final part from verse 46-68 sum up with the Upanishadic- Vedantic truths relating to Brahman (Ultimate Reality). Here the Goddess proclaims that she herself is Brahmana, Prakriti and Purusha. She discusses the role of Maya and shares kinds of concentration/dhyana for Savikalpa samadhi (Brahman /God with attributes like name, form etc)  and Nirvikalpa samadhi (Brahman without attributes.)

Saraswati Upanishad Verse 1 

Rishiyo ha vai Bhagavantmashvlaayanam sampujya paprachhu. Kenopaayen tajgyanam tatpadaarthabhaaskam. Yadypaasanayaa tatvam janansi bhagvan vad.

Meaning: The sages asked Sage Ashvalaayan full of reverence, ‘How is the knowledge gained that illumines the content of the word ‘Tat’. Tell us that O Holy Sir, by meditation on which you know the Truth.’

Saraswati Upanishad Verse2

Saraswatidashrlokyaa sahricha beejmishrayaa. Stutwa jalva paraam siddhimalabham munipundhvah

Meaning: Best of sages! I won this supreme perfection by exalting Saraswati with the recitation of 10 verses on her with the seed syllables.

Saraswati Upanishad Verse3:

Rishay Ucchu : Kathm saraswatpraptih ken dhyanen suvrat. Mahasaraswati yen tushta Bhagwati vad

Meaning: The sages said,

‘How by what meditation, Sage of dedicated life, is the truth of Saraswati won? What pleases the great and sacred goddess Saraswati?’

Meaning : Sage Ashvlaayana then spoke

‘Of this great mantra on the ten verses on Saraswati,I Ashvalaayana am the seer. The eight syllabled anustubh is the meter, the holy Vagisvari, the divinity, ‘Yadvak’ is the seed, ‘devin vacham’ the power, ‘pra no devi’ the linchpin, the application of the mantra is for pleasing her, the consecration of limbs is by faith, intelligence, wisdom, memory, the goddess of speech and Mahasaraswati.

Nihaarhaarghansaarsudhakarabhaamam. Kalyaanndaam kanakchampakdaambhoosham. Utthungapeenakuchkumbhmanoharaangim. Vaannim namami manasa vachsaam vibhootyai

Meaning : To win plenitude of speech in my heart, I salute the Goddess Saraswati who shines like snow, pearls, camphor and the moon, who grants auspicious blessings, is decked with garlands of golden champaka blossoms an her charming rounded figure.

Meaning: Of this mantra, BHaradwaja is the seer, Gayatri the metre, Sri Saraswati the divinity, Om the seed power and linchpin, its application is in getting what is desired, consecration is with a mantra.

Asangha satchidananda swaprabho dwaitvarjith, Asmitishabdhviddhoayam samadhi savikalpakh

swanubhootirsaanvashadhrushyashabdavupekshituh, Nirvikalpasamadhih syaannivaathstithdeepvath

Meaning (60-63) : Two fold is concentration in the human heart, with or without, Aspects, that with aspects is then Twofold conforming to word. And object, desire and its train Are objects of the mind, of them. As spectator meditate on consciousness. hat concentration conforms to objects

“I without taints am I, Being, knowing, loving am I, Self-shining, devoid of duality to word conforms. Thus concentration with aspects Abandoning aspects and words. For joy of deep Self-experience ,One wins concentration without. Aspects: a flame in a windless spot

Saraswati Upanishad Verse 64

hridhi va brahmadesheyapi Yasmin kasminshch vastuni samaadhiraadhya sanmaatraannamrooppruthkkrutih

Meaning: Like to concentration, in the heart outside too, In some object two -fold concentration. Takes place with discrimination. Of name and form from pure being

Saraswati Upanishad Verse 65

Stabdhibhaavo rasaaswadaath Tritiya poorvvanmath. Aetaih samadhibih shadbhirnayet kalam nirantaram

Meaning: The third as said above takes place, When taste of bliss to silence leads Time may without break be spent in these six concentrations as well

Nirvikalpasaakshaatkaar : Realization of Truth without aspects

Saraswati Upanishad Verse 66

Dehabhimane galite vigyaate paramaatmani, Yatr yatr mano yaati tatr tatr paramrutam

Meaning : With conceit in the body gone. And Supreme Self Realized. Wherever the mind may roam there rests immortality

Saraswati Upanishad Verse 67

Bhidhyate hrudayagrantishchidhyante sarvsamshayah, Kshiyante chaasya karmani tasmmin dhruste paravare

Meaning: The knot of the heart is cut asunder and all doubts are slain, All modes of action dwindle away when the Supreme Self is seen

 Saraswati Upanishad Verse 68

Mayi jivatvameeshtvam kalpitam vastutoh na hi. Iti yastu vijanaati sa mukto natr samshay

Meaning: A Finite Soul, the Supreme God, These notions are to me imputed. They are not Real, who knows this. In truth is free, doubt is there none
